Janie Teague Crompton, 86, of Manassas, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Born on June 22, 1940, in Granite Falls, North Carolina, Janie was one of five children of Katherine and Horace Teague. She grew up on the family tobacco farm and treasured the close-knit life she knew there, sharing stories of those years throughout her life. She went on to graduate from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, beginning a path that would shape countless lives.
Janie devoted more than 30 years to education as a primary school teacher and vice principal. Generations of students, families, and colleagues were touched by her dedication, and she carried the heart of a teacher in everything she did.
She built a life in Manassas, where she lived for more than 50 years alongside her beloved husband, Dick Crompton, who preceded her in death. Together they raised their family and grounded it in a faith that only deepened over the years. A longtime member of St. Thomas United Methodist Church in Manassas, Janie served faithfully in the food pantry and helped count the offering. Her guiding words, “One day at a time, sweet Jesus,” reflected the steady faith that carried her.
Janie found joy in the outdoors and in her garden, and in the quiet artistry of cross-stitch, stained glass crafts, and puzzles. She loved to cook, and her desserts were a favorite among all who gathered at her table. After retirement, she and Dick became devoted supporters of their son’s restaurant, Brock’s Riverside Grill in Fredericksburg, where Janie could often be found lending a hand however she could.
Those who knew her will remember her kindness, her generous heart, her quick wit, and her deep love of community.
She is survived by her son, James Todd Crompton; her step- daughter, Sherry Callahan; her sister, Mary Bowman; and her nieces and nephews, Susan Clontz, Joe Teague Jr., Amy Braswell, Rhonda Reinhardt, Ann Reece, Lex Teague, Shannon Reese, and Dawn Teague. She is also survived by her nephews on Dick’s side, Chris, Dicky, Kelly, Scott, and Greg Jones, and by many loving extended family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on July 25, 2026, at St. Thomas United Methodist Church, 8899 Sudley Road, Manassas, Virginia 20110.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Thomas United Methodist Church in Manassas (see the link below), or that you honor Janie by performing an act of kindness for someone in need.
