Philip B. Brooks of Herndon, Virginia passed away on August 22nd, 2026, at the age of 63 from complications of pancreatic cancer. He was born in October 1962, in Winchester, Virginia and resided in Herndon, VA for over 30 years.
He graduated from Chambersburg High School in 1980 and completed his BS in Computer Science at Shippensburg University in 1984.
Phil worked in the Information Technology field for over 40 years at companies including Unisys (Sperry-Univac), Equifax, and Microsoft. When he was not working, Phil enjoyed bowling, woodworking, history documentaries, visiting historical sites, and coaching youth sports.
He was actively involved in multiple Masonic organizations, serving as Worshipful Master of Herndon Lodge No. 264 (2011 & 2018), Freedom Lodge No. 118 (2012, 2014 & 2023), and as District Deputy Grand Master of Virginia’s 2nd Masonic District (2016). In addition to these Virginia lodges, Phil also belonged to George Washington Lodge No 143, Chambersburg, PA, A.D. Smith Lodge of Research No. 1949, and St. George Lodge No. 200, Bermuda, GRS. Phil took pride in mentoring new Masons and helping Brothers along their Masonic Journeys.
He was also a great supporter of Masonic Youth. Phil served as Associate Bethel Guardian for Bethel No. 52, Herndon and as Treasurer for the Commander William L. Herndon DeMolay Chapter.
Alongside his years of service, Phil also encouraged his family and Masonic community to contribute to charitable causes such as the Fairfax County Little League Challenger Baseball, Shriners Children’s Hospital, South Lakes High School Pantry, The Masonic Home of Virginia, and Blood Drive services.
Phil is preceded in death by his father Harry Joe Brooks and mother Gwendolyn Gail Brooks.
He is survived by his wife Jennifer, son Benjamin, daughter Emily, and grandchildren Mabel and Connor Brooks.
A Masonic Service will be held at the Old Stone Church at Green Spring 475 Greenspring Road, Winchester, VA 22603 on Saturday September 19 at 11:00 AM. The Old Stone Church is a Virginia historic site on private property.
INSTRUCTIONS: Access is via gravel road; Parking will be on open field; No AC/electricity is available; It is not handicap accessible: if mobility is an issue please plan accordingly
DIRECTIONS: Take Apple Pie Ridge Road (RT. 739) off Rout 522 and go west to White Hall. Turn left on Green Spring Road (Rt. 671). In 0.3 miles turn left. The road goes past the Shabb/Wolfe farm to the gravel road up to the church.
