On December 15, 2021 James Kevin Horton passed from this world into God’s arms. Born July 27, 1974 in Martinsville, Virginia to Sestress “Ses” Horton and Dorothy Howell Horton, Kevin was preceded in death by both parents and his older brother Sestress “Junebug” Horton, Jr. He is survived by his children Jacob and Logan Horton, his three sisters Debbie Mullins, Kathy Gravely, Lorrie Hodges, and his fiancé Rachel Schley.
A lifelong lover of the outdoors Kevin was always most happy and at peace when enjoying nature. During his military service in the United States Air Force, he enjoyed a posting in Fairbanks, Alaska and chose to remain there for one year after completing his service, taking full advantage of the bountiful fishing and hunting opportunities the region offered. The bagging of a trophy caribou was a true accomplishment and the velveted antlers have been adorning his walls ever since.
Knowing Kevin meant you knew that there was never a time he would turn away from the chance to fish in any body of water that looked good. In the past few years his obsession with fly fishing grew and he reveled in the being referred to as a “proficient caster” by many of the guides he fished with and an avid fly tyer. Not only did he love the sport, but he also loved sharing it with others. While Kevin spent the majority of his time fishing local rivers and creeks, his trips to New York and Montana were the highlights over the years and the memories made with friends and family were cherished by him. It was well known he had the ability to catch fish in places many others had failed and quietly rejoiced in his accomplishments.
In honor of Kevin’s love for the Yellowstone National Park, his children will travel there in the spring to spread his ashes and hold a private service. In lieu of flowers, please take time to enjoy the outdoors in Kevin’s memory, donate to your favorite national park or to the organization close to Kevin’s heart, Trout Unlimited, www.tu.org. Kevin’s selfless choice to be an organ donor will allow his gifts to live on through others, donations Donate Life organization, DonateLife.net are also welcomed.
