
Born January 15th 1927 and passed away peacefully August 16th, 2025
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents (Lillian Earl Moran Burke and Arthur Wade Burke Sr.) and his younger brother, James Price Burke and brother’s wife Sonya.
He is survived by sister Shirley Burke Rogon (Leo), nephews James Price Burke Jr, Alan Wade Burke, John Eric Burke and Patrick Calhoun Burke and their families.
Arthur grew up in Richmond, went to UVA and graduated with a B.A. in Biology in 1948 and a Masters degree in 1949. In 1957, Art received his Ph.D in biophysics from St Louis University. Art then went on to receive his medical degree from MCV in 1960.
He established the radiation therapy clinic at McGuire clinic on Parham, assisted in designing the cancer center of Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, and established the radiation therapy department at Henrico Doctors Hospital from which he retired at age 70.
Art was a long time grower and hybridizer of orchids specializing in cattleyas. He was an active and longtime member of the Virginia Orchid Society serving in many roles throughout the years.
Art maintained an active role in science serving as a member of the Virginia Academy of Science, serving in numerous capacities.
Art will be remembered as an avid supporter of education in science and growing orchids.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Virginia Academy of Science Fellows Fund or the Virginia Orchid Society Founders and Friends Endowment.
