

Born and raised in Hopewell, Virginia, Carolyn was the daughter of the late John Dolan Burnette and Mary Gladys Griffin Burnette. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Gene Gargis, and her son, Donald Gene Gargis Jr. (Deborah)
Carolyn is survived by her two daughters, Julia Melvin (Bruce) and Suzanne Gargis; her three granddaughters, Michelle Dudley, Lauren Garber (Adam) and Whitney Burdess (Joe); and her five great-grandchildren, Lilah, Davis, Carter, Dabney and Navy.
Carolyn graduated from Hopewell High School, Class of 1950 and from East Carolina University. She devoted many years of her life to education, serving as an elementary and middle school teacher in Hopewell Public Schools. Throughout her life, she was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Hopewell, where she was an active volunteer and served on many mission trips.
Carolyn cherished her family and friends. She loved to travel, seek new adventures, read, dance and live life fully, always with a heart devoted to her loved ones and to serving others.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Watercrest Senior Living, Richmond and A Touch of Grace Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Carolyn’s birthday, Friday, March 13th, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Charleston Club Clubhouse, 17700 Twin Falls Lane, Moseley, Virginia.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made online to First Baptist Church of Hopewell.
