Born on October 16, 1930, in Danville, Virginia, he was the son of Lena Sue Hoskins and Paul Truman Hundley. He is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Sally Lou Hundley and 3 children, Betsy Kapsak, Susan Gaillard (Reid), and Paul Hundley (Jenny). He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jim Hundley (Pat). Four siblings pre-deceased him; Carl Hundley, Paul Hundley Jr., Marie Prillaman, and Urselle Tignor.
After high school, Clay served for 4 years in the Air Force and afterward attended Ferrum College and Richmond Polytechnic Institute and eventually received his master’s degree from University of Virginia.
In his early years, he worked as a State Trooper and spent a period of time as an English teacher before going on to a long career at the Defense General Supply Center as a comptroller.
Clay and Sally built a family and home life filled with structure, loyalty, laughter, and stories that will be told for years to come. His children grew up under his watchful eye and very strict rules. He believed in common sense and personal responsibility. Work hard, save money, and do not, under any circumstances, go outside barefoot or embarrass him by wearing jeans with holes in the knees.
To many — especially his children’s friends — he could seem stern, intimidating, and not to be tested. But those who knew him well knew the truth: underneath the serious exterior was a kind and generous man who put his family first, even if affection was more likely to come wrapped in sarcasm, or a teasing remark.
He enjoyed the beach and watching his stock portfolio ebb and flow. He had a serious sweet tooth, and was a good cook who especially enjoyed grilling. He also enjoyed singing in the house. Saturday mornings often came with chores and music played at full volume. Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra were favorites. Even in his later years, singing was a go to for passing the time waiting in doctors offices.
He will be remembered for his wit, his sarcasm, his unforgettable rules and the steady, enduring way he cared for those around him. He also leaves a lifetime of memories that his family will cherish, laugh about, and repeat often.
There will be no Visitation or Memorial Service at this time.
