Mrs. Doris Smith Sharpe, 79, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia, the city where she was born on June 25, 1946. Her life was a testament to unwavering faith, deep compassion, and steadfast devotion to her family and the family of faith.
Doris played a vital role in the spiritual life of many. She was an integral part of the establishment of Western Hanover Church, where she poured her heart into nurturing its growth and mission. Her love for serving in the church extended especially to working with children—helping lay the foundation for their journeys with Christ through gentle guidance and joyful encouragement. Doris dedicated many years of her life as well working in the pathology labs at both St. Luke's Hospital and Retreat Hospital.
Doris’s greatest joy came from being surrounded by those she loved. She was a devoted wife to Terry M. Sharpe and a loving mother to Jay Smith (Kim) and Bonnie Diehr (Lance). She also embraced her role as stepmother to Jonathan Sharpe and Rachel Moore (Brandon), extending her warmth and care without bounds.
Her family circle included her cherished grandchildren: Austin Diehr; Kaitlin Verdone (Marco); Sydney Hayes (Nick); Bryan Diehr (Liz); and step-grandchildren Emma Pedler, Sam Pedler, Josh Moore, Alyse Hickey, Kasey Sharpe, Dave Sharpe, and Genevieve Sharpe. Doris found immense delight in watching them grow and thrive. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren Scottie Leigh Diehr and Henry James Hayes.
She shared a close bond with her siblings Peggy Gary (Wayne), Tripp Heflebower, and Paul Heflebower. Doris also held dear the memory of those who preceded her in death: her first husband James (Jim) G. Smith Jr., and her parents Samuel Ellis and Doris “Bootsie” Heflebower.
Those who knew Doris will remember her as caring, kind, loving, committed, and deeply faithful. She had a unique gift for listening, offering comfort without judgment or unsolicited advice—and gently guiding others with wisdom rooted in love. Her presence brought peace; her words brought clarity.
Doris cherished time spent with family above all else. Whether gathered around a dinner table or enjoying sunny days at Myrtle Beach, these moments were treasures she held close to her heart.
May the memory of Doris bring comfort to all who were blessed by her grace-filled presence. A Memorial Service will be held on January 8, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church 2300 Dumbarton Road. Following the service there will be a lunch reception in the fellowship hall of Hatcher where the family will greet friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church
