

He died on October 10, 2025, at the age of 83 years. Hans was born May 1, 1942, in Vogelsang, Germany. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and patriot, who departed this life peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Hans dedicated his life to service, honor, and community. He proudly served in both the United States Marine Corps and the Army for a total of 20 years, embodying the values of courage, discipline, and commitment. Following his military career, he continued to serve his country through 20 years of civil service, retiring with distinction and gratitude from his peers.
Beyond his professional achievements, Hans was a man of vibrant passions and cultural pride. He was an avid soccer enthusiast and a joyful comedian and participant in German Karneval traditions. His involvement with the Deutsche Sportsclub and the Richmond Oktoberfest brought him great joy and lifelong friendships. Whether cheering on a soccer match or dancing in celebration, he brought warmth and laughter to every gathering.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Suntok Stienen, and his cherished children: Hans Stienen Jr.; Erika Crowder (Brad); James Stienen (Katie); Monika Mack (Damion); and Kim Modica (Tony). His legacy continues through seven adored grandchildren: Matthew, Mason, Madeleine, Makennah, Aaron, Austin, and Aiden.
Hans will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, his spirited love of life, and the deep pride he took in his heritage and family. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the traditions upheld, and the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on November 15, 2025 at 1100 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Petersburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a veterans’ organization or the Deutsche Sportsclub of Richmond Virginia in his honor.
