Larry B. Mason, 79, of Crozier, Virginia, passed away on March 1, 2025. surrounded by his loving family. Born February 26, 1946, in Pineville, Kentucky, Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Sue Mason; children, Vicki Snow, Becky Mason, and David Mason (Catherine); sister, Pam Scott (Bickley); sisters-in-law, Sue Mason, Sharon Mason, Julia Parnell (Gene), and Patricia Conkle (Bob), and many nieces and nephews. Larry was the proud “Poppy” to six grandchildren (Katy, Julie, Becky, Carrie, Garrett, and Eliza), and as he loved to say, “all of which were boys except five of them.” Larry is preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Lonnie and Betty Mason; his mother and stepfather, Marie and Herb Langley, brothers Fred Mason and Ernie Mason.
As those who know Larry will understand, there were no strangers, only friends he had not met yet. Many of those friendships were made and blossomed through Larry’s leadership and service to Salem Baptist Church, his involvement in various community groups in Goochland County and surrounding areas, multiple gospel singing groups, and professionally from his time as Superintendent at Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center followed by his time at the Virginia Department of Social Services, where he retired in 2000.
On most days, you could find Larry gardening, riding one of his John Deere tractors with a smile and a wave for those passing by, or woodworking in his shop. Even more so, Larry loved traveling with Sue to visit family, create memories, and spend time in fellowship with those he loved.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Friday, March 7th, at Salem Baptist Church (465 Broad Street Rd, Manakin Sabot, VA23103). Visitation will begin at 9:30AM, followed by a memorial service at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the VCU Massey Cancer Center or Salem Baptist Church on his behalf.
