She was surrounded by those who loved her in her final days, including her rescue hounds, Sweetie and Buddy, and her rescue cat, Miss Kitty.
Linda was born in Bryn Mawr, PA in 1945 to Fay Anderson Nowlin and Richard Nowlin, joining her older sister, Nita. Her family moved to Washington, DC when she was in elementary school. She enjoyed studying ballet and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1963. Linda attended the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She moved to Richmond, VA in 1968 where she started a family and quickly planted roots, making friends who would remain steadfast until the day she died.
Linda met her husband Dan Jones in 1988, and they were married in August of 2002. They spent many years making wonderful memories, enjoying the great outdoors and traveling the world together. Linda and Dan celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary at home together days before she passed.
Family was most important to Linda above all things. She loved her daughters dearly, and one of her favorite roles later in life was being a grandmother. She treasured her time with her grandsons and adored being their “Grandmommy.” She loved taking them on “adventures.” From dinner and a movie or mini golf to weekend trips to the country, a lake, or the beach, she cherished every second with them, and they will forever hold those memories with her. She also had a special place in her heart for her furry children, treating each and every one like the valuable family member they were. At one time, she and Dan had five rescue hounds living with them.
Linda possessed a true gift for public speaking and was admired by all for her abundant charm, intellect, and presence. She had an expansive, diverse, and rewarding career which began with modeling for Miller & Rhoads and Thalhimers, where she served as youth coordinator and manager of the French Room. She served in leadership roles at VCU’s School of Business and School of Engineering Foundation, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the UVA Darden School of Business, the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC), and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
As a development consultant, she led capital campaigns for the Henricus Historical Park, the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, the Robert Russa Moton Museum, and the Center Stage Foundation, among others. Linda had a knack for transforming a home into something beautiful, so she decided to add residential realtor to her resume later in life, working for Joyner Fine Properties and Napier ERA. She loved her clients and took great pride in helping them buy or sell a home.
Linda was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and served on many volunteer boards over the years including the Woman’s Club of Richmond, Murie Center (Jackson, WY), and Powhatan Free Clinic.
Linda was loving, fiercely independent, determined, brilliant, and beautiful inside and out. She loved nature, tending to her garden, outdoor activities, and animals of every kind. She was always known for bringing people together and had dear friends around the country who were like extended family to her. From lunches with her modeling girlfriends to hikes in the Tetons or visits to beautiful places around the world, her friends were an integral part of her life. She will be remembered for her beauty, grace, and kindness. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Nowlin, Fay Nowlin Schrader and Granger Schrader, and her sister Nita Whitesel. She is survived by her husband, Daniel Gordon Jones, daughters Lara Dalch and Kelly Dalch Spraker (Stephen), her grandsons Talbot and Charlie Spraker, her nieces Cheri Hennessy and Fay Manthey (Don), their children and grandchildren.
The family is eternally grateful to Linda’s caregivers, especially Kelly Cook, with whom she developed a wonderful friendship over the past eight months. They would also like to thank Serenity First Hospice for their compassionate care of Linda in her final days.
