

With heavy hearts but fond memories, we bid farewell to Lucy Dahl Johns Swartz, who peacefully departed this world on June 9, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on August 18, 1945, in the serene countryside of Buckingham, VA, Lucy's journey was one of boundless love, unwavering dedication, and eternal grace.
Lucy's passion for nurturing young minds led her on a remarkable path as a cherished school teacher, a vocation she was devoted to for over four decades. From the halls of Richmond and Charlottesville, VA to the grounds of St. Michael's Episcopal School in Bon Air, VA, she imparted knowledge, kindness, and inspiration to generations of students, leaving a memorable mark on their hearts and minds.
Lucy found solace and community in her relationship with God. She possessed a deep love for the written word, finding strength and delight within the pages of cherished books. Her love of the family lake house, sandy beaches, and bike rides brought a smile to her face as she enjoyed time with her family and friends. In the company of her cherished sisters, Agnes, Martha and Logan and brother, Frank along with her dear friends, Lucy found joy as her laughter and supportive words painted the world in hues of warmth and affection.
Lucy’s heart overflowed with love, for her husband, children, and especially for her three amazing grandchildren. They were the sunshine that brightened her days, filling her life with adventure and wonder. Lucy found great happiness in creating Grandma memories that shall forever remain aglow in the gardens of her legacy.
Lucy's spirit danced with the grace of butterflies, and her world was painted in the gentle hues of pastel colors, reflecting her tender heart and enduring optimism. Her kindness knew no bounds. Lucy’s strength and dedication to survival, as well as her positive outlook is an example of light to others, illuminating even the darkest of days.
Lucy leaves behind a legacy of love and many cherished family members. She is survived by her devoted husband, Garland Swartz, her daughter Lucy Varna Swartz Redlich, son-in-law Jared Redlich, and grandchildren Lucy, Sadie, and Miller and a multitude of wonderful siblings, nieces, nephews and extended family members.Though her son Johns Swartz has gone before her, his spirit remains entwined with hers for eternity. She was also preceded in death by her loving parents, Frank and Lucy Johns, and her sweet baby sister Susan Johns.
A Celebration of Life Service honoring Lucy's remarkable journey will be held at Powhatan United Methodist Church, on Wednesday June 19 at 10 am, followed by a reception. Please wear Lucy’s favorite bright and pastel colors. A private family graveside service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Buckingham, VA, where Lucy's journey began.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Michael’s Episcopal School or Powhatan United Methodist Church, a testament to Lucy's enduring spirit of generosity and compassion that touched the lives of all who knew her.
In the quiet corners of our hearts, where memories blossom like flowers in spring, Lucy's spirit will forever reside, a beacon of love and light guiding us through the hardest of times. Though she may have departed from this world, her legacy of love will continue to illuminate our lives, a testament to the beautiful soul she was.
