

Steve Burgess passed away on March 25, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on April 18, 1946 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Steve was the son of Filmore and Ann Burgess. Steve graduated from Rowan (Glasboro) University, where he earned his degree in Special Education. Steve proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years during the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged. Following his military service, he worked for 28 years at J.R. Tucker High School as a Special Education teacher, where he also coached girl’s softball, track, and cross-country, and originated the Tucker All Stars Classic Basketball Tournament for special needs students. Steve is survived by his wife of 50 years Cindy; his son, Jesse; his grandson, Jack; his brothers, Robert (Candy); Philip (Barbara) and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Steve loved nature and the outdoors, especially going on hikes with his son and grandson. He was an avid fisherman. Steve was a diehard New York Yankees fan. He loved history, particularly the Civil War, and visiting battlefield sites. A celebration of life will be held at 11am at Stony Point Church, 2330 Buford Road, Bon Air, VA 23235 on May 16, 2026
