A lifelong Virginian, Steve graduated from Meadowbrook High School in Richmond in 1974. He went on to a dedicated 39-year career in renal dialysis, which served him well until his retirement as a biomedical technician in 2013. He had many great friends among his coworkers.
Steve applied himself diligently to the things he loved: his family, his faith, and his hobbies. A man of steady devotion, he was a member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church for 35 years. He was best known by many for his lifelong commitment to martial arts; he practiced well into his 50’s and was a member of the Virginia Karate Club and Warriors Martial Arts Club. Steve had a true passion for teaching karate, sharing his discipline and spirit with many students over the years. When he wasn't in the dojo, he could often be found fishing or playing music.
Steve was the only son of the late Guy D. and Gaynell T. Burns, and was preceded in death by his parents; and older sister, Gay D. Burns. His legacy lives on through his wife of 41 years, Cathy; his sons, Guy Cameron and James Cullen Burns; and his younger sister, Susan B. Blakely (Ron). Please join the family for a celebration of Steve’s life on Saturday May 16, 2026 at 1:00 pm at Calvary Chapel Richmond, 11900 Genito Road, Midlothian, VA 23112. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Steve’s honor, please consider the National Kidney Foundation.
