Virginia McKee Smith

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson A. ‘Chub’ Smith, who died Aug. 20, 1999. Surviving children are Barry L. Smith of Lewistown; Barbara Smith Vogt and husband Tom of Oxford, Pa.; Carol Smith Hobbs and husband Phil of Chesterfield, Va.; and Steven R. Smith and partner Amy Stauffer of Lewistown. She had eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Virginia was born Feb. 13,1925, to the late Thomas M. and Ruth Snyder McKee. She was one of six children. She was preceded in death by her brothers, T. Wilson McKee of Florida, Gordon S. McKee and Lynn M. McKee both of Lewistown. She is survived by her sister Winifred O’Halloran and husband James of Willow Street, Pa., and brother Stanley E. McKee and wife Evelyn of McVeytown.

Except for a few years, she lived her life on the family farm in Ferguson Valley, which was built for her grandfather in the mid-1800’s and has been continuously occupied by family members since that time. Virginia was an avid gardener who loved to share what she grew. She would freeze and can vegetables and her pickles were everyone’s favorite. She was a wonderful baker, and many people were the recipients of her delicious baked items and homemade jam. She was a faithful member of Ellen Chapel Church and for many years mailed church literature and Sunday bulletins to those who could no longer attend, writing a personal note to help brighten their day.

A celebration of her life will be held in Spring of 2022, and interment will be private.

She will be forever loved and remembered, and the family appreciates your support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor can be made to Ellen Chapel Church, 11764 Ferguson Valley Road, Lewistown, PA 17044.
