Born in Edenton, North Carolina, Jerry graduated from Chowan High School before honorably serving his country in the United States Air Force. After his discharge, he continued his education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Virginia State University, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. He spent 15 years in his civilian career with VEPCO before returning to military service. Over 28 distinguished years in the Air Force, Air National Guard (Sandston, VA), and later with the Federal Aviation Administration (Charlotte, NC), he achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and proudly served during Operation Desert Storm. His commitment to duty reflected the character and integrity that defined his life.
Jerry was an avid fisherman and an active member of the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association, where he enjoyed deep-sea fishing, beach cleanups, and annual picnics. The ocean was his happy place. He was never short on “big fish” tales and was happiest on a boat with a fishing rod in hand or cooking up a Low Country Boil at the annual picnic.
Photography was one of Jerry’s lifelong passions. He had a gift for capturing both the big moments and the small, preserving memories for those he loved. If you knew him, you were likely photographed by him. Whether at a family gathering, company picnic, milestone celebration, or any excuse to bring people together, Jerry was there with his camera. You may even own one of his award-winning photos.
Jerry was also a natural storyteller. He filled his life — and the lives of those around him — with stories of adventure and experience. Whether recounting the time he survived a tornado in Oklahoma City (after stopping to take a picture, of course), securing the last seat on a flight home for his daughter’s birth, or befriending the “enemy” while deployed, he treasured the memories made during his worldwide travels and loved sharing them. As he often said, “I’ve lived a good life.” Through his stories, you knew he truly had.
Most of all, Jerry was a man of service. He cared for his family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers without hesitation. He showed up. He cooked. He helped. He gave. He asked for nothing in return. His joy came from serving others.
Jerry’s call to heaven reunited him with his son, Henry Wallace White; his parents, Mary Elizabeth and Sidney Wallace White; and his four siblings.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Freda White; his daughter, Stephanie Lady (Robyn); and the three lights of his life — his grandchildren, Maegan Basl, Lauryn Basl, and Tanner Basl, who will carry forward his stories, humor, and love. He will be deeply missed.
Per Jerry’s wishes, the immediate family will hold a private ceremony at the beach — one of his favorite places. The family welcomes friends and loved ones to share stories, photos, and memories in celebration of a life well lived.
